Promises by Candidate/President Obama About Keeping Health Plans

  • Speech to American Medical Association, June 15, 2009. “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.”
  • Press Conference Remarks, June 23, 2009: “When I say if you have your plan and you like it, or you have a doctor and you like your doctor, that you don’t have to change plans, what I’m saying is the government is not going to make you change plans under health reform.”
  • Address to Joint Session of Congress, September 9, 2009: “If you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, Medicare, Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have. Let me repeat this: nothing in our plan requires you to change what you have.”
  • All told, there were three dozen instances in which the president made this pledge in various forms.
