The Dartmouth Atlas project brings together researchers in diverse disciplines – including epidemiology, economics, and statistics – and focuses on the accurate description of how medical resources are distributed and used in the United States. Data are compiled by multi-county Health Service Areas and Hospital Referral Regions. The 1996, 1998 and 1999 editions are downloadable. The Atlas has examined major topics including a) unwarranted variation in the use of care, is more health care better?, reforming the Medicare program, care at the end of life and shared decision-making.
